CMAI Indian Wireless Equipment Licensing Requirements

“Wireless Planning and Coordination” (WPC) wing of the Ministry of Communications and IT,Government of India is the official wing to address licensing issues for use of wireless in India.WPC is very proactive in attending to ever increasing needs of industry, consumers and other stake holders and eased the procedures for use of several band of frequencies.Over the last four years exemption from licensing requirement has been granted to use of a band of frequencies. Various notifications beginning in 2005 have greatly opened out the market for industrial applications of wireless solutions.Indoor use of low power equipment in the frequency band 2.4 GHz to 2.4835 GHz with maximum effective radiated power of 4W (36 dBm) is now permissible. The frequency band 865 – 867 MHz for RFID devices is permissible. Frequency 5.825 to 5.875 GHz, 335 MHz for remote control of cranes, and 26.957 to 27.283 MHz frequency are other de-licensed bands. These notifications are as relevant to the manufacturer as it is for the supplier of the equipments. Even as the use of equipments in notified frequency bands have been exempted from license, manufacturers are mandated to interface with WPC regarding use of particular equipments of wireless. The wireless equipments used shall have to be type approved, designed, and constructed in such a manner that a bandwidth of emission and other parameters conform to limits specified in the respective notifications of the WPC.A decentralized approach has been adopted by WPC, with the enablement of the regional offices across the country to interface with the users of wireless equipment as also the suppliers seeking type approvals.
